About the Artist

DJ Welvin has been DJing since setting foot on the campus of his alma mater, George Mason University. “I was walking through our student community center and saw a flyer looking for people interested in becoming a DJ. Within a few short months, I was DJing all over Northern Virginia and DC for parties and special events.” His DJ career didn’t end in college, and he’s continued to hone his craft at weddings, corporate events, and private parties ever since. We asked Welvin to share his thoughts on being a professional DJ, and here’s what he had to say!

What is your relationship with music? What does it mean to you?

“Music is such an important part of my life, I can’t even imagine who I would be without music. I was in the school band all through high school, playing various percussion instruments, and I’ve been able to continue to share music the past several years through DJing. There’s an energy and joy in listening to (and sharing) music, it’s why I’m always listening to music wherever I am – It’s truly amazing how music can bring people together.”

What do you enjoy about being a wedding DJ?
“I love being able to create a mix where people are happy, dancing, or singing along to the songs I’ve chosen – making people happy through music creates a sense of joy and togetherness for me and for the crowd. Those same emotions are why I enjoy DJing weddings so much; it’s a special celebration where family and friends are coming together to have a happy, memorable time and the right music can make the experience so much more enjoyable for everyone.”

What’s your favorite kind of couple/crowd to work with?
“I actually enjoy working with a wide variety of crowds, it’s makes every event unique – when I walk into a wedding, everything is a fresh opportunity and a fresh challenge to create a fun, memorable experience. As long as the couple is looking to have a great dance party, we are on the same page and working toward the same goal and I know I’m going to be successful.”

What’s the best one or two pieces of advice you give to couples?
“Your wedding is an opportunity to showcase the things that make your relationship special, so create your wedding day as a reflection of who you are as a couple. Also, don’t feel afraid to delegate or ask for help; everyone you’ve hired is here to help make your big day run smoothly.”
